ACRA’S CODE OF ETHICS
FOR CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) PROVIDERS

  1. A CART provider will use discretion and accept only those assignments that are within the writer’s capability and can achieve quality CART translation.
  2. A CART provider will have completed training in providing communication access realtime translation from a school, continuing education program or an experienced CART Provider to include correct translation of numbers, elimination of conflicts, prefixes and suffixes, fingerspelling alphabets, proper speaker identification, software display functions, environmental sounds, and deaf culture sensitivity.
  3. A CART provider will maintain confidentiality of the CART consumer’s name and personal information acquired through the course of providing service.
  4. A CART provider will avoid conflicts of interest at all times by clarifying their role before accepting assignments; i.e., not preparing an official record of the proceedings, clarify whether a roughly edited file is to be produced and to whom it will be given.
  5. A CART provider will be honest in describing their qualifications and experience.
  6. A CART provider will maintain the integrity of the stenographic profession.
  7. A CART provider will avoid acting in a dual capacity, i.e., official reporter and CART provider, in a legal proceeding.
  8. A CART provider will convey the intent of the speaker while striving to be verbatim.
  9. A CART provider will strive to acquire as much preparation material possible in order to prepare a job dictionary and achieve a high translation rate.
